The following are actual police reports as written by Longboat Key Police Officers. They are edited for length, punctuation and to protect privacy.
June 26
Alarm
9:04 a.m.
Officer Troyer was dispatched to the 2900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive on a report of a burglary alarm with front door motion. While enroute, the alarm company contacted the homeowner who reported no persons should be present. Upon arrival, Sgt. Montfort located a flooring company van in the driveway. Sgt. Montfort and Officer Troyer made contact with the individuals who said they were at the residence to do flooring work and provided a work order. On the work order was an address in Holmes Beach, they were at the wrong residence. The two men did not speak English well. Sgt. Montfort contacted the homeowner who requested the residence be checked for security purposes. The men left the residence without incident. Case clear.
Vehicle
11:04 a.m.
Officer Troyer while on patrol in the area of the 1000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive was sitting at the entrance to a neighborhood when he observed a Chevrolet Suburban driving northbound and appeared to be speeding. The area the vehicle was traveling through was a marked construction zone and had a posted speed limit of 35 mph. Also, there were construction workers present on the roadway working on the road. Officer Troyer used the radar detector to measure the vehicle’s speed, which was measured at 50 mph. Officer Troyer conducted a traffic stop in the same area and spoke to the driver and asked him for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. The driver told me he did not have any of what he asked for and only had an identification card. Officer Troyer asked the driver why he had an identification card to which he said his license was taken away. Officer Troyer asked him why he was driving with no license to which he said he had to work. The man also said he bought the vehicle a couple days ago and the mounted license plate did not belong on the vehicle. The driver did not have proof of ownership for the vehicle. Officer Troyer cleared the license plate which revealed the license plate was registered to ‘unknown.’ Officer Troyer contacted the dispatch center and requested a tow for the vehicle due to being unregistered and uninsured. During Officer Troyer’s inventory search of the vehicle, he located two pill bottles which were labeled ‘hydro chloroquine.’ The man said the pills belonged to his wife and grandmother. Officer Troyer then confiscated the pill bottles and placed them into evidence for safekeeping because he did not want to leave them in the car without the man’s name being on them. Case clear.
June 27
Suspicious
12:58 p.m.
Officer Maple, Officer Nazareno and Sgt. Smith met with the complainant who stated she was asked by a neighbor to move her vehicle so she would not suffer damage from the complex painting project. The complainant proceeded to move her vehicle and upon her returning to her condominium moments later, she saw her front door not properly secured and thought she heard a voice inside. She said she observed footprints in the front entry and called 911. Sgt. Smith and Officer Nazareno canvassed the condominium and did not find anything out of the ordinary and no persons were observed inside. There were no signs of forced entry and foot prints escribed by complainant were not observed as she had said. The condominium was undergoing an extensive cleaning by the complainant and several pieces of furniture looked to have been moved to clean. Officer Maple escorted the complainant around the condominium and she stated nothing was missing or appeared to be out of order. Case clear.
Noise
11:13 p.m.
Officer Martinson was dispatched to the 5600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive on a call of a noise disturbance. Upon arrival, Officer Martinson could not hear any loud noise coming from the unit. Officer Martinson advised the woman there was a complaint about loud noise. The woman apologized and stated she had been watching a movie earlier and admitted to having the volume up pretty loud. The woman stated she had already turned off of the movie and television. Case clear.
June 28
Citizen assist
3:40 p.m.
Officer Barrett received a call of a telephone pole floating in the waterway east of Joan Durante Park, towards the Intracoastal waterway posing a hazard to boaters. Upon arrival, Officer Barrett observed a telephone pole floating in the water. Officer Barrett utilized a dock line from the police vessel to drag it into a dock at Joan Durante Park and secured it to the dock to prevent it from becoming a hazard to boaters. Case clear.
Suspicious
12:00 p.m.
Officer Martinson was dispatched to the 360 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive on a call of a Suspicious Incident. Officer Martinson made contact with the complainant over his department issued cell phone. The complainant stated that over the past couple of days she had received three packages to her residence with no name that she did not order. The complainant said the three packages contained children’s underwear and some type of cylinder weights. The complainant was advised the packages where more than likely delivered in error and that she should contact the company and return them to sender. The complainant insisted that this was not a mistake and that the officer label the report as ‘suspicious’ even though at this time there is no evidence as such. Case clear.
Citizen assist
11:35 p.m.
Officer Tillman responded to the 200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and met with the driver of a vehicle who stated that he had run out of gas. Officer Tillman proceeded to the gas station at the 400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and was unable to located a gas can and the gas station was closed. The driver stated that he called his girlfriend to bring him some gas. Case clear.
911 call
7:54 a.m.
Officer Maple was dispatched to the 4700 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for an abandoned 911 call. Upon his arrival, Officer Maple met with the front desk receptionist who stated they were unable to get ahold of guests in one of the rooms who had made the call. The complainant stated there were two adults and three children in the room. Officer Maple met with the room occupant who stated his wife was in the shower and one of the children were playing with the phone. Officer Maple overheard the wife in the shower with one of the younger children stating everything was okay. There were no signs of an emergency or anything of concern. Case clear.
June 29
Suspicious
8:52 p.m.
Officer Miklos while on patrol observed a man sitting on a bench near the entry of a closed business. Officer Miklos noticed the man was then laying down and sleeping, and then he initiated a consensual conversation with the man. During the conversation, the man advised that he was homeless and was planning on sleeping on Longboat Key. The man was not interested in any assistance and requested a ride to Bradenton. Officer Miklos contacted Sgt. Puccio and advised him of the man’s request to be3 transported to Cortez Road. Officer Miklos conducted a frisk of the man and placed him in the rear passenger seat. The man was transported to Cortez Road without incident, case clear.
June 30
Raccoon
9:43 p.m.
Officer Troyer was dispatched to Harbor Sound Drive in reference to a caller who reported her dog was bitten by a raccoon. Upon arrival, the caller reported her dog was bitten by a raccoon and the raccoon has since left the area. The dog owner was not sure what to do so she requested animal services. Officer Troyer informed her to seek veterinary advice and did not locate any raccoon in the area. Case clear.
