On Patrol Longboat Key Police reports week of September 6, 2024

The following are actual police reports as written by Longboat Key Police Officers. They are edited for length, punctuation and to protect privacy.

Aug. 30
Boat
2:46 p.m.
Sgt. Montfort while on patrol, was dispatched to a marine rescue in the area of 2500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. It was reported that a sailboat was in distress a mile offshore and was stopped in the water. Officer Mathis and Sgt. Montfort deployed the Boston Whaler patrol vessel and responded to the area in the Gulf of Mexico. Officers arrived in the area a short time later and located a small hobby-craft sailing vessel approximately a mile offshore. The captain of the hobby craft stated that the wind had stopped and he was unable to get back to shore. Officer Mathis and Sgt. Montfort escorted him and the vessel back to shore. The captain said he did not need medical attention and appreciated the response. Case clear.

Aug. 31
Kayak
11:55 a.m.
Officer Pescuma was dispatched to Spanish Drive North in reference to an overturned kayak with a person in the water. While in route, dispatch informed Sgt. Butler that the man was picked up by a good Samaritan on a nearby vessel and was no longer in distress. The operator of the kayak was making arrangements to salvage the kayak. At this time, the kayak is not a hazard to navigation and is located outside the navigable waterway, east of the intercoastal waterway. Once on scene, Officer Pescuma observed the Manatee Sheriff’s Office Marine unit on scene with kayak and they advised that there were Florida registration numbers on the hull. The kayak has a small engine with minimal fuel onboard. Case clear.

Rescue
1:50 p.m.
Officer Ramsaier was dispatched to North Shore Road for a call of a rescue assist. Upon arrival, Officer Ramsaier was directed to Greer Island beach where he was flagged down by several people in regards to a patient who was unresponsive with CPR being performed on him. Officer Ramsaier took over CPR compressions until Longboat Key EMS arrived on scene. Shortly after arrival, EMS continued CPR. The man was removed to Blake Hospital by EMS. Officer Ramsaier arrived at Blake Hospital with the patient in stable but critical condition. Officer Ramsaier was tending to the patient and was met by the persons who had both performed CPR on the complainant. Officer Ramsaier relieved both attending persons performing chest compressions. At approximately 1:56 p.m., Sgt. Montfort and Officer Mathis arrived on scene via marine patrol and assisted in performing CPR. Officer Ramsaier interviewed one of the individuals who performed CPR and he said he observed the patient arrive at Greer Island on his pontoon boat. He saw the man enter the water to secure an anchor, then heard him then call out “Help.” The man fell face down into the water. The witness then entered the water and pulled the patient to shore. The man and the woman then took turns performing CPR until first responders arrived. Case clear.

Disturbance
7:45 p.m.
Officer Mathis was dispatched to the 1600 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive in reference to a disturbance at the beach bar. Upon his arrival, Officer Mathis made contact with a security staff member who explained that a man who was sitting at the beach bar for the resort became unruly after being told he would not be served any more alcoholic drinks. The man further advised that the man had some inappropriate remarks towards staff, paid his bar tab then left the property and walked south on the beach. The security staff was unsure of the subjects name but provided a description of a 50 year-old white male in a teal shirt. A canvass of the area was conducted but the man was unable to be located. Case clear.

Sept. 1
Restaurant
3:56 a.m.
Officer Maple was conducting a business check at 5400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and located an unlocked door at the restaurant. During the check, the side entrance door was found partially opened. Premises was canvassed for any signs of criminal activity or forced entry with negative results. Side door was successfully secured by Officer Maple. Case clear.

Sept. 3
Parking
11:15 a.m.
Officer Nazareno was dispatched to Harbourside Drive for an abandoned vehicle. Upon arrival, Officer Nazareno was met by the Resort’s Security Officer who advised that a green Chevy Blazer SUV without a tag that had been parked in the parking lot for more than a month. Officer Nazareno ran the vin number and it came back negative as a stolen vehicle and was not currently registered. Resort security advised that they will tow the vehicle. Case clear.

Traffic light
2:43 p.m.
Officer Ramsaier was dispatched to Bay Isles Parkway for a flashing traffic signal. Officer Ramsaier and Officer Pescuma conducted traffic until Longboat Key Public Works arrived on scene and corrected the light. Case clear.

Sept. 5
Property
3:06 p.m.
Officer Pescuma was dispatched to Marbury Lane in reference to property damage to several traffic cones allegedly caused by a blue pickup truck. While in route, dispatch advised that the blue pickup truck was last seen driving northwest on General Harris Street. Officer Pescuma then observed the vehicle that matched the description and tag located at General Harris Street. Officer Pescuma conducted an FCIC/NCIC check on the vehicle and it came back to a blue Ford pickup truck. The owner came back to a pavers company in Sarasota. Officer Pescuma then made contact with the driver and advised him the reason for the stop. The man said he was advised by the homeowner that he ran over two traffic cones that were at the end of the driveway of his residence. The man stated he was unaware that he struck them, however provided the two with his contact information. Officer Pescuma along with Officer Ramsaier followed up with the complainants who stated that this is an ongoing issue with construction works and commercial vehicles that drive on Marbury Lane. Officer Pescuma asked the complainants if they actually saw the vehicle striking the traffic cones, however, they stated they did not, but will review their video surveillance. At the time, the complainants will work with the complainant to remedy the civil matter. Case clear.

License
3:30 p.m.
Officer Ramsaier while on patrol was alerted via the target alert service from a license plate alert notification for a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license with no insurance on file. An FCIC/NCIC query was conducted and confirmed as the registered owner’s driver’s license was suspended and no insurance was on file. The vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted at the 5200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Officer Ramsaier made contact with the driver and explained the reason for the traffic stop being for a suspended license and no insurance. The driver produced a Florida Driver’s license and a valid Florida Registration card. Officer Ramsaier asked the driver if he was aware that his license was suspended. The driver replied “It’s in my house and he was coming home from work.” Upon receiving license from the driver, Officer Ramsaier conducted a further NCIC/FCIC check and found that the driver had a suspended license. Accompanying the notes was a condition that stipulated he was given a temporary permit set to expire on Sept. 16. The notes read “permit issued/no license received.” Driver was unable to produce any paperwork, temporary license or any document to support this. Officer Ramsaier asked again if the driver knew his license was suspended and he replied that he did and that he was sorry. Driver was cited for driving while license suspended, revoked, or canceled and no proof of insurance. Case clear.
