April 22
Suspicious vehicle
3:51 a.m.
Sgt. Cooper while on patrol was dispatched to Chatham Drive. The caller thought the vehicle was suspicious because the tail lights were on. A check of the vehicle found it unoccupied and cold to the touch. The registration was run and found properly registered in Massachusetts. Nothing further to report at this time. Case clear.
Welfare check
12:19 p.m.
Officer Macniven responded to Longboat Club Road on a report of a welfare check of an 83-year-old man. The complainant has not heard from him since yesterday. Upon Officer Macniven’s arrival, he met with the property manager who advised the officer the man of the welfare check was at the pool. Officer Macniven went to the pool area and spoke with the man who stated he was well and was just swimming in the pool. He was on the phone with the complainant. Case clear.
April 23
Noise from land
12:08 a.m.
Officer Martinson was dispatched while on patrol to the 4700 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive on a call of a noise complaint. Upon arrival to the area, officers observed two vehicles parked in the Atlas Street Beach Access parking lot and people outside talking. Officer Martinson advised them that it was past 11 p.m. and the beach access parking was closed. The people got into their vehicles and drove away. Case clear.
April 24
Nude man
7:15 p.m.
Officer Martinson responded to the 4500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a suspicious incident call. The remarks in the call stated there was a 70-year-old white male walking southbound on the beach nude. Upon arrival, Officer Martinson walked out to the beach but did not see the nude man. There was a couple on the beach watching the sunset so Officer Martinson asked them if they had seen a nude man walking on the beach. They advised the officer that there was an elderly man walking on the beach wearing a “banana hammock” thong swimsuit, but that he was not nude. Case clear.
April 25
Lost property
1:13 p.m.
Officer Nagell responded to the 5300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive and proceeded southbound. While driving he realized that he had left the hatchback up and his wife’s bags fell out. He back tracked to the area he had come from and was unable to locate the blue duffle bag. He arrived today and was wondering if anyone had turned it in. Officer Nagell advised that the bag contained several pairs of women’s slacks and clothing. He related that the estimated cost of the loss is between $1,000 and $2,000. Officer Nagell advised him that he would take the lost property report and provided him with a business card. Case clear.
April 26
Animal complaint
8:45 a.m.
Officer Hodo was dispatched to the 4400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive in reference to a found dog. Officer Hodo arrived and made contact with the complainant. The complainant stated that she will keep the dog until the owners come forward. Officer Hodo noted that the owners later came to the police station and make a report. The complainant stated that she will keep the dog until the owners come forward. Officer Hodo noted that the owners later came to the police station and was directed to complainant to reunite with their dog that had gotten out the door. Nothing further, case clear.
Citizen assist
9:52 p.m.
Officer Montfort while on patrol was dispatched to the beach access for a report of a large hole that was dug in the beach. Officer Montfort arrived at the access and walked out to the beach. He observed a large hole that was dug sometime earlier in the day. Officer Montfort filled in the hole and returned to service without incident. Case clear.
Suspicious incident
9:55 p.m.
Sgt. Cooper responded to the 200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a report of a suspicious incident. Upon arrival, Sgt. Cooper made contact with the complainant who advised that he heard two explosions approximately 30 years offshore in the water, followed by a splash. Sgt. Cooper then made contact with the bridge tender who advised that he did not see or hear anything. He further advised that dolphins frequently jump our of the water in that area and the sound can be pretty loud. US Coast Guard was notified by dispatch. There were no signs of dead fish or anything else showing an explosion did occur. Nothing further at this time.
Citizen dispute
6:58 p.m.
Officer Montfort responded to Broadway for a report of a disturbance. While en route, it was reported that an elderly man causing the disturbance was leaving the area. Officer Montfort arrived on the scene and spoke with the valet attendants while they were parking vehicles. It was determined that a customer arrived at the restaurant and was denied service due to not having a reservation. It was further reported that the man demanded to be seated. After the man was told to leave the premises he compiled and went on his way.
April 28
Suspicious person
2:27 p.m.
Officer Nazareno was dispatched to St. Judes Drive for a report of a suspicious person on a boat fishing in the canal with cast nets. Upon arrival, Officer Nazareno observed mullet fishermen. He spoke with the complainant and advised him, they are bait fishermen. He thought the fishermen were trying to catch dolphin. No violation observed. Case closed.
Noise complaints from land
Sgt. Smith responded to Cedar Street for a report of construction noise outside permitted hours. Sgt. Smith arrived and observed a man using a power tool. Sgt. Smith issued him a code enforcement civil citation first offense. He had Officer Zunz translate and explain the citation and the violators options. Case clear.
April 29
Vin verification
10:03 a.m.
Officer Zunz was at the police department when a Longboat Key resident entered the police department for assistance with a VIN verification on a vehicle he had driven here from his residence in Utah. Officer Zunz checked for wants/warrants on the vehicle which gave a negative result. Officer Zunz stamped his DMV form and sent him on his way. Case clear.
