The following are actual police reports as written by Longboat Key Police Officers. They are edited for length, punctuation and to protect privacy.
April 1
Citizen assist
2:45 p.m.
Officer Montfort responded to the 4000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a report of dogs locked in a vehicle. Officer Montfort arrived on scene and was greeted by the complainant who had locked her keys, cell phone and two dogs inside of the vehicle accidentally. The complainant was distraught and requested that the officer break the window to the vehicle. Officer Montfort asked if another set of keys were available. The complainant contacted her husband at her home address. The complainant requested that the officer pick up her husband on Gulf of Mexico Drive, to which the officer obliged. Officer Montfort then proceeded to pick up the complainant’s husband and brought him back to the location of the locked vehicle and using his spare set of car keys, opened the vehicle without incident. Case clear.
Traffic hazard
3:45 p.m.
Officer Montfort responded to the 2500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive in reference to a stranded vehicle blocking the roadway. Officer Montfort greeted the registered owner of the vehicle who stated that his car overheated and the engine shut off. Officer Montfort advised the operator to place the vehicle in neutral and that he would push the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle was pushed from the road without incident. The operator made contact with coworkers who will be bringing coolant to the location. Case clear.
April 2
Citizen assist
12:20 a.m.
Officer Tillman located a man and a woman walking around Harry’s Market. After speaking with them, it was apparent that they had locked themselves out of the rental property on St. Judes Road. The two stated that their phone was now out of battery and all the information on the rental property was stored on the phone. Officer Tillman and the two people proceeded to the property and called a locksmith to assist with the situation. Officer Tillman stayed at the residence until a locksmith arrived. Case clear.

6:20 p.m.
Officer Cooper responded to Spanish Drive for a citizen assist. Upon arrival, Officer Cooper made contact with the caller who indicated he was concerned about materials left on his roof by his roofing company. He further stated that several pieces of high density Styrofoam had blown off. Officer Cooper advised the caller that this was a civil matter and he should contact his roofing company. Nothing further to report. Case clear.

Suspicious boat
1:20 p.m.
Officer Kolodzieski while on marine patrol, received a phone call with second hand information about a sailboat by the shoreline at Overlook Park that seemed out of the ordinary. Officer Kolodzieski responded in the marine truck and observed a blue and white 24-foot sailboat anchored near the shoreline. Officer Kolodzieski observed a man in his 50s or 60s board, and spoke to him from the shoreline. The man stated that he had a metal detector and was looking for a wedding ring that was lost near the shoreline. He stated his vessel was fine and did not need any assistance. He did inform Officer Kolodzieski that if police get a call of an unusual noise coming from his boat, it would be related to his bird. He then reached into his cabin and came out with a Yellow Crested Cockatoo. Officer Kolodzieski asked if he was staying overnight. He advised he was staying overnight and he had two sets of white lights on board his vessel. Case clear.

9:22 p.m.
Officer Tillman responded to the 4500 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive in response to people walking on the beach with flashlights. Officer Tillman called the complainant back and advised her that it was not turtle nesting season and not after beach hours. The complainant stated that she was unsure of what to do and appreciated the explanation. Case clear.
April 4
Found key
11:08 a.m.
Officer Zunz responded to the front desk of the police department for someone turning in a red Ferrari key FOB she had found while walking over the New Pass Bridge. A Google search of the name written on the attached keyring yielded no results. The key has been placed into a temporary locker for safekeeping. Nothing further.
April 5
Noise from land
6:05 a.m.
Officer Macniven responded to the 1000 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a report of a lawn mower noise coming from the Longboat Key Resort golf course. The dispatch notes stated that the complainant is woken up everyday from the noise on the golf course. Officer Macniven spoke with the complainant and explained to her that the golf course is exempt from the Longboat Key noise ordinance. She said she was not aware of the exemption, she said she understood, no action taken.

3:11 p.m.
Officer Martinson responded to the 2400 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a call of a disabled vehicle. Upon arrival, Officer Martinson observed a white BMW stalled in the northbound lane. Officer Martinson attempted to jump start the vehicle but the engine would not turn over and the officers were unable to get the vehicle into neutral to push it off the road. The owner had called AAA before the officer’s arrival and a tow truck was already en route. Officer Martinson parked behind the vehicle with the squad car’s emergency lights on to help guide traffic around it until the tow truck arrived. Case clear.
April 7
Noise from water
9:05 p.m.
Officer Tillman responded to Lands End Drive in reference to a noise violation. Longboat Key Police Marine Unit did not have a boat in the water to assist. Officers arrived on scene and located a vessel near Greer Island with loud music. Officer Tillman was not able to identify the occupants or vessel due to the distance from shore, but did convey to them about their noise violation. The vessel was seen leaving the area, problem resolved. Case clear.
April 8
Traffic hazard
12:47 a.m.
Officer Tillman responded to the 5800 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive for a traffic hazard. The traffic hazard was a palm frond completely blocking the southbound bike lane. The hazard was removed from the roadway without incident. The incident was captured on camera. Case clear.
