La traviata

Giuseppe Verdi’s tragedy of love and illness in nineteenth-century Paris returns to the Sarasota Opera House. La traviata, set to Francesco Maria Piave’s libretto, centers on Violetta, a courtesan who abandons her cosmopolitan life for genuine romance, only to face demands for self-sacrifice from her lover’s family. The production maintains the company's traditional approach to staging and period design. Violetta’s physical decline and social isolation are mirrored in a demanding vocal score that requires a soprano capable of both rapid coloratura in the first act and sustained, heavy lyricism in the final scenes.
