Poetry Book Club: “Strange Angels” by William Pitt Root

Readers dissect the rugged, nature-focused verse of William Pitt Root during a meeting of the Poetry Book Club at Bookstore1Sarasota. Facilitator Doug Knowlton leads the hour-long discussion of Strange Angels, examining how the poet utilizes the vast landscapes of the American West to explore themes of mortality, memory, and ecological preservation. The conversation breaks down Root’s vivid imagery and his ability to balance philosophical weight with grounded, conversational language. The gathering provides a dedicated forum for attendees to analyze the structural choices and underlying metaphors of a writer deeply entrenched in the mythology and harsh realities of the wilderness.
