Sophisticated Ladies

Conceived by Donald McKayle, this Tony Award-winning musical revue surveys the extensive catalog of composer Duke Ellington. Staged at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, the production features a live band and an ensemble cast navigating the distinct eras of Ellington’s career, from the Cotton Club to his later symphonic suites. Directed by Jim Weaver, the performance encompasses iconic jazz standards such as "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and "Take the 'A' Train." The show relies on intricate vocal harmonies, tap dancing, and period-specific choreography to evoke the elegance and complex musical architecture that defined the bandleader's legacy.
