Andrea Carlson: A Constant Sky

The Ringling mounts the first museum survey for mixed-media visual artist Andrea Carlson (Grand Portage Ojibwe and European descent). Spanning ten years of her practice, the exhibition gathers more than thirty paintings, drawings, sculptures and videos, as well as a large-scale sculptural installation. Carlson layers historical references, cinema and sequential art to create prismatic, colorful landscapes that challenge colonial narratives and examine the ongoing erasure of Indigenous presence. She describes these layered horizons as "inferred political space," turning the traditional landscape genre into an inquiry about imperialism, ownership and belonging.
