Beginner’s Watercolor en Plein Air

This is a three-hour class, not an exhibition, taught by botanical watercolorist Cris Godoy, who divides her teaching between Florida and Rio de Janeiro and leads workshops regularly at Selby Gardens. The session starts with the mechanics beginners usually skip: laying an even wash, blending wet into wet, building layers and reading tonal values for light and shadow. A portion of the class then moves out among the collections on the downtown campus to paint from living plants rather than photographs. No experience is assumed, and arriving early to wander the gardens and scout a subject is encouraged. Questions about the class go to Selby's programs office.
