Bernstein & Barber

The Sarasota Orchestra tackles the aggressive syncopation and sweeping lyricism of mid-century American music in a Masterworks program dedicated to Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber. The performance requires extreme stylistic agility from the ensemble, pivoting from the dense, jazz-influenced percussion and brass demands of Bernstein’s theatrical scores to the sustained, mournful string phrasing characteristic of Barber. The concert highlights the friction and innovation of 20th-century American composition, challenging the orchestra to execute complex, shifting time signatures while maintaining absolute clarity. The evening offers a high-volume, technically grueling survey of the domestic classical canon.
