Hansel and Gretel w/ Sarasota Opera

The classic Grimm brothers fairy tale receives a full operatic treatment as Sarasota Opera stages Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel. Featuring the company's Youth Opera chorus alongside professional principal singers, the production emphasizes the lush, Wagnerian orchestration of Humperdinck's 1893 score rather than simply playing as a children's pantomime. The narrative follows the siblings through the dark forest as they encounter the Sandman, the Dew Fairy, and the infamous gingerbread house. The performance provides an accessible entry point into the operatic repertoire while maintaining the complex vocal demands and rich Germanic folklore of the original work.
