Pennies, seashells and shark teeth are among the materials Jing Herman sets into her American flag paintings, using a non-toxic paste she developed herself. One of them, "Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness," spells its title in pennies and now belongs to the collection of the White House Historical Association, which is presenting an exhibition of her work called "The Beautiful Country" in the lobby of One Sarasota Tower. The program adds a full-size reproduction of that painting to the original canvases, along with a conversation led by Jason Molihan, the Association's director of Leadership Annual Giving. Herman, a former JPMorgan banker, is working toward a series of fifty flags.
