Yoshida Fujio: Secret Gardens

Open 10:00 AM–5:00 PM daily (hours vary). Raised in an artistic family, she began exhibiting her work as a teenager and traveled extensively through North America and Europe with fellow artist Yoshida Hiroshi, whom she later married. While Hiroshi became celebrated for his landscape prints, Fujio developed a distinctive artistic voice through her sensitive depictions of flowers and still life.

Like many women of her generation, Fujio’s artistic trajectory was disrupted by family responsibilities. During years when motherhood limited her ability to travel and exhibit, she turned to the plants and blossoms of her home and garden. These intimate studies became the foundation for a remarkable second act. After the Second World War, she embraced abstraction, transforming flowers into luminous compositions of layered color and biomorphic form. Rooted in close observation of nature yet driven by a search for self, her paintings and prints suggest contemplation, transformation, and self-discovery.

Yoshida Fujio: Secret Gardens is the first exhibition in the southeastern United States devoted to this remarkable artist. Drawn from the collections of Roberta and Bill Stein and The Ringling, it brings together a selection of woodblock prints and one painting spanning key moments in Fujio’;s long career, from her early naturalistic works to the striking abstractions of her later decades. The exhibition also places her art in conversation with works by women artists in her extended artistic circle—including her daughter-in-law Chizuko Yoshida, granddaughter Ayomi Yoshida, and several later artists whose careers reflect the broader opportunities that pioneers such as Fujio helped create. Together, these works celebrate an artist whose originality, resilience, and enduring influence continue to gain international recognition.
