Ariadne Auf Naxos w/ Sarasota Opera

High tragedy collides with low comedy in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, an inventive meta-opera presented by the Sarasota Opera. The plot focuses on a wealthy patron who demands that two distinct performance troupes—one staging a solemn Greek myth, the other a slapstick commedia dell'arte routine—perform simultaneously to ensure the evening’s fireworks start on schedule. The resulting spectacle forces the mournful Ariadne to share the stage with the flirtatious Zerbinetta, culminating in one of the most demanding coloratura soprano arias in the classical repertoire. The production highlights Strauss’s ability to weave lush romantic orchestration with sharp, self-aware theatrical satire.
