Art on Film | Gerard Richter Painting

Director Corinna Belz’s 2011 documentary Gerhard Richter Painting screens in the auditorium of the Sarasota Art Museum as part of its ongoing film series. The film offers an observational study of the acclaimed German artist at work in his studio during the spring and summer of 2009. Belz captures Richter as he creates a series of large-scale abstract canvases, utilizing his oversized squeegee to drag thick layers of primary colors across the surface. The screening provides a rare look at the highly guarded painter’s physical technique and his iterative process of building up and scraping away paint to achieve his final compositions.
