Jenufa w/ Sarasota Opera

Infanticide and religious rigidity drive the devastating narrative of Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa, staged during the Sarasota Opera winter festival. Conducted by David Neely, the Czech masterpiece focuses on a young woman who secretly bears a child out of wedlock, prompting her stern stepmother to commit a horrific crime in order to preserve the family’s social standing. The score bypasses traditional arias in favor of speech-melody, mirroring the natural cadence of the Moravian language to heighten the psychological tension. The production provides a stark, emotionally grueling experience, demanding intense dramatic commitment from its cast to navigate the themes of betrayal, shame, and eventual forgiveness.
