Run for the Turtles

More than a thousand runners gather on the packed white quartz sands of Siesta Key Beach for the forty-first annual Run for the Turtles. Benefiting Mote Marine Laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, the morning features both a one-mile fun run and a competitive, Manasota Track Club–sanctioned 5K. Athletes navigate the flat, coastal terrain as the sun rises over the Gulf, testing their endurance against the coastal humidity and uneven footing. The sheer volume of registration fees directly funds Mote's rigorous daily patrols, hospital rehabilitation efforts, and ongoing documentation of nesting marine life along the region's barrier islands.
