The fictionalized exploits of an American acting dynasty take the stage in The Royal Family, directed by Peter Amster. Written by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, the comedy follows a clan of theater royalty in 1927 New York City as they clash over fame, artistic duty, and the urge to abandon the stage for a quieter life. Asolo Repertory Theatre revives the Broadway classic at the Mertz Theatre, leaning into the sharp dialogue and outsized egos of the era. The play pokes knowing fun at the real-life Barrymore family and the enduring magnetism of the spotlight.
