Anastasia: The Musical

The lingering mystery of the Romanov dynasty's final survivor drives the narrative in Anastasia: The Musical, a sweeping historical production staged by the Manatee Performing Arts Center. The plot follows an amnesiac street sweeper in 1920s St. Petersburg who joins forces with two con men in a scheme to convince the Dowager Empress in Paris that she is the lost Grand Duchess. The score, penned by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, blends Russian choral influences with traditional Broadway ballads. The performance focuses on the protagonist's psychological struggle to reclaim her identity amidst the political fallout of the Russian Revolution.
