Clothing Swap to Save the Drops!

Highlighting the massive water consumption of the global textile industry, the UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County hosts a community clothing swap at Twin Lakes Park. The sustainability event provides a practical alternative to fast fashion, allowing residents to refresh their wardrobes without contributing to the resource-heavy manufacturing of new garments. Before the exchange begins, environmental educators briefly explain how much water is required to produce standard cotton clothing and dye fabrics. Participants then trade gently used shirts, pants, and accessories in a formalized swap, directly diverting usable textiles from the landfill and reducing their personal ecological footprints.
