Filipinana

Rafael Manuel expands his award-winning short into the feature-length drama Filipiñana, now playing at area cinemas. The story centers on Isabel (Jorrybell Agoto), a seventeen-year-old girl from the rural north who works at an exclusive golf club outside Manila, spending her days lining up golf balls for wealthy male patrons. Through strict, formalist cinematography, Manuel uses mundane details—the angle of a club or the suffocating heat—to build a quiet tension. As Isabel navigates the rigid hierarchy of the club's wealthy patrons and exploited workers, the film constructs a stark critique of class and post-colonial reality in the Philippines.
