Rootabaga Country (Sarasota Youth Opera)

Experience Rootabaga Country, a Sarasota Youth Opera production and children’s opera in one act, with music and libretto by Rachel J Peters.

This whimsical and imaginative work is inspired by Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories, following Gimme the Ax and his children, Please Gimme and Ax Me No Questions, as they journey through the imaginative but not magical landscape of Rootabaga Country. Along the way, they seek to learn more about the mother they never knew, discovering deeper truths about themselves and their family.

Blending playful storytelling with heartfelt themes, Rootabaga Country is musically crafted for young voices while offering rich character development and emotional depth. The opera captures a sense of youthful wonder and curiosity, balanced with moments of reflection and discovery.

As the family travels through this uniquely imaginative world, they encounter challenges and revelations that help them understand that love and belonging can take many forms. The story gently explores themes of courage, identity, and connection, creating a meaningful and resonant experience for audiences of all ages.

Perfect for families, students, and opera lovers, this delightful production showcases the talent of Sarasota Youth Opera while bringing a creative and engaging narrative to life. Rootabaga Country is both entertaining and inspiring, offering a fresh take on storytelling through music.

Celebrate imagination, music, and the power of family with this charming and thoughtful opera.
