Banned Book Club: “Song of Solomon” by Toni Morrison

Readers convene at Bookstore1Sarasota to dissect Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon as part of a recurring discussion focused on frequently challenged literature. The conversation centers on the 1977 novel’s intricate exploration of Black American identity, tracing the life of Macon "Milkman" Dead III as he searches for his family's hidden origins in the South. Participants analyze Morrison’s use of magical realism, folklore, and complex family dynamics, while also addressing the specific political and social reasons the text has repeatedly faced censorship in public schools. The meeting operates as an analytical forum to unpack a major work of twentieth-century fiction and the ongoing debates surrounding intellectual freedom.
