Cinema at The Bay: Rocky (50th Anniversary)

The 1976 sports drama Rocky celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with an outdoor screening at The Oval inside The Bay Park. Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, the film tells the story of Rocky Balboa, a working-class club fighter from Philadelphia who receives an unlikely shot at the world heavyweight championship against Apollo Creed. Directed by John G. Avildsen, the movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains a foundational piece of American cinema for its underdog narrative and Bill Conti’s recognizable brass score. The park displays the film on an inflatable screen, with the surrounding urban landscape serving as a backdrop.
