Scarier Than a Millage Rate: Longboat Town Hall Dresses Up for Halloween

Most weeks, the Longboat Key Town Commission chambers serve as the island’s own house of horrors. This is the room where millage rates get set, where the town squares off with resorts over arches, and where residents learn all about the joys of burying power lines underground.

This week, the room got a different kind of scary.

Early Thursday afternoon, town staff took over the chambers and turned them into an all-out Halloween costume party, full of the strange juxtapositions you only get when an entire municipal workforce strategizes in small groups. Elvis was in the building. So was Joe Dirt. The Three Musketeers turned up, all for one and one for the potluck. The new town manager came as George Washington, and somewhere in the crowd stood a human pig in a blanket.

One staffer went the extra mile in the kitchen, turning out a batch of homemade pierogies that was a showstopper on the buffet table.

For the budget hawks, take heart: the whole affair lasted about an hour and a half, everyone brought their own food, and no alcohol was served, other than whatever may be hiding in the file cabinets. We didn’t check.
